The Gower Walking Festival has added three extra walks to its already extensive walk programme, bringing the total number of walks on offer to nearly 40.
The new walks range from a 1-mile industrial heritage and regeneration walk, via a 3-mile urban stroll exploring significant places in Swansea’s cultural landscape, to a more challenging 8-miler open heathland, quiet lanes and attractive field paths, with wonderful views.
First upon Sunday 6th September, is the Swansea’s Creative Minds walk, a fascinating journey through the creative heart of Swansea, exploring the people and places that have inspired generations of writers, poets, artists, musicians and broadcasters. This 3-mile urban walk starts in Cwmdonkin Park, near to the birthplace and childhood home of Dylan Thomas. It makes its way through Swansea city centre to conclude at the Swansea International Jazz Festival in the Marina, where we’ll enjoy an exclusive question-and-answer session with jazz festival founder Dave Cottle BEM, one of Wales’s most respected jazz musicians.
An easy 1-mile exploration of the White Rock Industrial Heritage Park follows on Wednesday 9th September. The White Rock Copper Works were established in the Lower Swansea Valley in 1736. White Rock was one of the most important copper smelting works in the Lower Swansea Valley, the world centre of non-ferrous smelting for much of the 18th and 19th Centuries. On this walk we will visit the past, present and future of White Rock.
Also just added to the programme is the Clyne Farm, Commons & Lily Pond Walk on Thursday 10th September. Starting and finishing at the Clyne Farm Centre, this walk explores the beautiful commons, historic villages and peaceful countryside of eastern Gower. Expect a varied route across open heathland, quiet lanes and attractive field paths, with wonderful views and plenty of stories along the way.
