The Dylan Thomas Birthplace is at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive in Swansea’s Uplands, where one of Wales’s greatest writers was born in 1914.
Dylan spent the first twenty-three years of his life here and wrote around two-thirds of his published work within these walls. More than a museum, the Birthplace is a carefully restored Edwardian family home, offering a rare opportunity to experience the rooms where his imagination first took shape.
Stepping through the front door feels less like visiting an attraction and more like entering a home whose story is still unfolding. Lovingly restored to reflect the house as it would have appeared during Dylan’s childhood, it offers visitors an intimate connection with his life, his family and the Swansea that inspired so much of his writing. Today, the Birthplace welcomes guests for guided tours, literary events, dining experiences and unique overnight stays.
The house was officially opened by Dylan’s daughter, Aeronwy Ellis, on the 94th anniversary of his birth in 2008.
Former US President Jimmy Carter recorded a welcome for visitors, describing the house as “It’s as if the Thomases have just popped out and they’ll be back in a minute now.” King Charles III, then Prince Charles, visited the Birthplace in 2012.

For 2026, The Dylan Thomas Birthplace is sponsoring Swansea’s Creative Minds Walk on Sunday 6th September. A fascinating journey exploring the people and places of Swansea that have inspired generations of writers, poets, artists, musicians and broadcasters. Beginning in Cwmdonkin Park, near the childhood home of Dylan Thomas, it will incorporate stories of Dylan Thomas, Vernon Watkins, Nigel Jenkins, Russell T Davies, Ludwig Wittgenstein and others and finish at the Swansea International Jazz Festival in the Marina.
