Three Cliffs Bay, Pennard Castle and Gower Heritage Centre – 3 miles

This circular walk from the Gower Heritage Centre explores the rich history, landscape, and natural beauty of Three Cliffs Valley, shaped by medieval power, agriculture, and coastal forces.

Leaving the Heritage Centre, the route follows the valley associated with the influential de Breos family, Norman lords who controlled much of Gower and built Pennard Castle, which still overlooks the coast today. The walk highlights their legacy, including the historic mill at the Heritage Centre site and the medieval shaping of the surrounding landscape.

Climbing towards Pennard Castle, walkers enjoy dramatic views over dunes and limestone cliffs. The route continues across the edge of the golf course before descending into the sandy expanse of Three Cliffs Bay, where tidal rivers, dunes, and limestone stacks create a dynamic coastal environment rich in wildlife.

The return follows the valley floor, passing wooded slopes, farmland, and evidence of centuries of human activity shaped by geology, water, and settlement.

Family friendly: The walk is suitable for accompanied children although it does include some short inclines and coast path. See How to Book for the rules regarding children.
Well-behaved dogs on short leads can join the walk – see How to Book for the rules regarding dogs.
Toilets are available at the start and finish.
Walkers purchasing the £10 ticket receive free parking, entry to the Heritage Centre, and a “Vintage Tea” of tea/coffee and cakes made with flour milled on site. The £7 ticket includes the walk and free parking.

The walk is led by Roy Church, owner of the Gower Heritage Centre in Parkmill. The centre is built around a fully functioning 12th-century water-powered flour mill and includes rural history displays showcasing agricultural Gower, alongside a poultry park and tea garden.

For younger visitors, there are mini tractors, diggers, a soft play area, and an outdoor play space with sandpit, slides, swings, and a castle. Craft workshops are also based at the centre, which is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
