Lliw reservoirs and Mynydd y Gwair – 7 miles

A beautiful walk from Lliw Reservoirs to Mynydd y Gwair that is a classic Swansea upland route that moves from water-side paths into open moorland, giving a strong contrast of landscapes.

You start at the Lower Lliw Reservoir, where well-made paths run alongside the water and through sheltered woodland and sculpture trails. The early section is easy-going, with views across calm water backed by the green valleys of the Mawr district. Wildlife is common here – waterfowl, birds of prey, and woodland birds are often seen.

From the upper reservoir, the walk begins to climb gradually out of the valley. The terrain becomes more open and exposed as you follow tracks and farm roads towards the foothills of Mynydd y Gwair. This section feels wilder, with wide views opening out over Swansea, the Gower coast on clear days, and the surrounding uplands.

Reaching Mynydd y Gwair (373m), the landscape turns into open heath and wind-shaped grassland with wind turbines marking the ridge. The summit area offers sweeping panoramic views across the Swansea Valley, Ammanford direction, and the Brecon Beacons in the distance.

Overall, it’s a walk of two halves: sheltered reservoir scenery first, then a rewarding climb into exposed upland terrain with big sky views and a real sense of space.

A packed lunch is required. The cafe by the car park should be open.
The walk is not suitable for children.
Well-behaved dogs on short leads can join the walk – see How to Book for the rules regarding dogs.
