We are pleased to welcome Surfside Cafés back as a walk sponsor for a second consecutive year, following their fantastic support in 2025.
Hitting the Wales Coast Path heading west out of Swansea is nearly always a good decision, with sweeping views ahead and to your left. And, amongst the stunning maritime scenery, you will find some pleasing stop-offs, providing comfort for the weary traveller or some social relaxation for those perhaps a bit less active.
The Surfside Cafés can fulfil all those needs and, what is more, you are spoilt for choice, with three distinctive outlets making a valuable contribution to bay life. So, whether it is Rotherslade, Langland or Caswell, you will come across a Surfside café.
And, how appropriate that for the second year running, Surfside Cafés have stepped up to support Gower Walking Festival as a sponsor.
“It’s a good fit,” said owner Nigel Calcutt, whose Surfside story goes back to 2002.
He hails from the surf bastion of Newquay in Cornwall, and his love of that hobby brought him to study at Swansea University, attracted by the same possibilities that existed. It was a decision he never regretted, so much so that when he said farewell to the university, he found it too difficult to do the same to his adopted city.
So, stay he did, and the idea of running a business by the sea soon took hold. Now, 24 years later, the Surfside Cafés are as integral a part of the local coastline as the sand, rocks and surf stretching out in front of them.
His loyal clientele certainly agrees, with many of the regulars pulling up a chair on an almost daily basis. That helps create a lovely atmosphere, something supplemented by staff who clearly enjoy working there.
“We are really lucky to have such great locations for all the cafes, but, more than that, we have lovely locals who are often in the cafés every day,” said Nigel. “We have also been incredibly lucky to have such great staff – nearly all of whom are locals too.”
Breakfast is served all day, alongside teacakes, toast, bagels, sandwiches, paninis and toasties. Salad lovers are catered for, while a special attraction is the range of gourmet steak burgers, lamb burgers and veggie burgers. There seems to be no limit on the number of different coffees available, although you may prefer tea, including herbal varieties, or cold drinks, with Marshfield Farm ice cream also on the table.
There is plenty for any walker to mull over…
For 2026, Surfside Cafés are once again sponsoring the Bards, Beaches & Bards walk on Monday 7th September.
