Starting at Verdi’s in Mumbles, this walk explores the rich history of Oystermouth and its medieval castle through the development of the village, church, and coastline. Following the promenade, the route pauses at key locations to examine how the settlement grew from an early coastal community into an important Norman stronghold.
Along the way, stops including All Saints Church highlight the close relationship between religion, local settlement, and the defensive role of the castle overlooking Swansea Bay. Walkers will learn how trade, conflict, and strategic position shaped Oystermouth through the medieval period and beyond.
After a short break, the walk culminates in a full guided tour of Oystermouth Castle, exploring its construction, changing architecture, and turbulent history. The tour will cover the powerful families, Norman lords, Welsh princes, and royal visitors connected with the castle, as well as the conflicts and sieges that shaped its dramatic past.
