Parkmill and Ilston – 5 miles

A circular walk from The Gower Inn at Parkmill takes you through contrasting Gower landscapes of valley, church, common land, and open plateau.

From Parkmill, the route follows the wooded Ilston Valley, tracing the stream upstream through sheltered woodland and farmland with birdsong and historic field boundaries. The path leads to St Illtyd’s Church, Ilston, a peaceful medieval church set at the top of the valley.

From here, the walk goes onto Fairwood Common, where the scenery opens dramatically into wide, exposed heathland and grazing fields. The route crosses open ground near Swansea Airport, with long views across the Gower Peninsula and occasional aircraft overhead.

You then continue across the common before gradually descending back towards Parkmill, returning through quieter lanes and woodland edges. The walk offers a clear contrast between enclosed valley scenery and expansive upland views, linking natural beauty, local history, and modern Gower landmarks in one varied and accessible circular route.
